Storing and Handling Compounded Medications

Compounded preparations carry a beyond-use date and storage directions specific to the formulation. Follow the label, not habit.

Beyond-use date

Instead of a manufacturer’s expiration date, a compounded preparation has a beyond-use date. The pharmacist assigns it based on the formulation, available stability information and applicable USP standards. Discard the preparation after that date.

Temperature

Some preparations need refrigeration, and some can be damaged by it. The label tells you which. Do not freeze unless directed.

General rules

  • Keep it in the container it came in.
  • Keep it away from children and pets.
  • Ask the pharmacist how to dispose of unused medication.
