Veterinary Prescriptions for Compounded Preparations

Species, weight, strength and flavor all shape a veterinary preparation. So does whether the patient is a food-producing animal.

5 minute readFor veterinarians

Include

  • Patient species, name and current weight.
  • Owner name and contact details.
  • Drug, strength or concentration, and dosage form.
  • Flavor preference and any ingredients to avoid.
  • Quantity, directions and refills.
  • Whether the animal is or may become a food-producing animal.

Food-producing species

Federal rules restrict compounding for food-producing animals, and horses are treated as food-producing animals under federal law. Expect additional review for equine and livestock requests.

Federal and state framework

Animal drug compounding is not governed by section 503A. It falls under federal animal drug provisions, including FDA Guidance for Industry #256 on compounding from bulk drug substances, and Pennsylvania pharmacy law. Policies on office-use dispensing differ by jurisdiction; contact us to discuss your practice’s needs.
